Tu-20 BEAR (1\/100 Scale)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From East Germany comes the latest kit from V.E.B., a veritable giant (22 inch Wingspan) of the Tu-20 Russian Reconnaissance and Bomber Aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>As a kit it is a mixture of good and bad. The wings and engines are common with V.E.B.&#8217;s earlier Tu-114 kit, and require a lot of attention, with separate ailerons which sag sadly away from the wing, and the less said about the engine nacelles the better. Fit here is appalling, and the turboprop exhausts need to be completely remodelled from plastic tube. Wing and tailplane trailing edges are of the blunt instrument variety, and the wing fences are thick enough to herd sheep with. The fuselage however is new, and shows the advances made in tool-work the company has made over the past few years. Although still a little crude, it features raised panel lines and recessed doors and rudder detail. Transparencies are clear, with average fit, so the flight deck could do with cutting out and detail added as this will be visible. The undercarriage is sturdy, with minimal detailing and overthick doors.<\/p>\n<p>The aircraft depicted is the Bear B, but comes without the Kangaroo air-to-surface missiles associated with the type. It features the large duck-billed nose radome, but the other numerous lumps and bumps which seem to clutter this type of aircraft have been omitted. To convert to the other Bear variants will require removal of the nose radome and rebuilding the forward fuselage, with a glazed nose, and chin radome. A major task this, especially for those already worn out cleaning up the wings!<\/p>\n<p>References, at least photographic ones, are fairly plentiful, and will help indicate the various radome and blister placements. Air Combat Vol 3, No. 3 has a good feature on the Bear, but the aircraft illustrated is the Bear D, not the \u0412 as claimed. I would not like to be too dogmatic as to overall accuracy, but the finished model looks right, so probably is not far out.<\/p>\n<p>Like the PO-2, this kit is as yet only available in Eastern Europe, but we would expect VHF Supplies of Hounslow to have limited stocks from time to time, but cost will probably be fairly high.
